Stott and Solomon top flood of Breede entries

Cape Town - With the closing date for entries for the 2011 Breede River canoe marathon looming large on Wednesday this week, two former winners Ant Stott and Graeme Solomon have lodged their entry, and in the process thrown down the gauntlet to the rest of the country's top K2 crews.

Solomon took the title in brutally tough low river conditions, still spoken of as the lowest ever, with Dawid Mocké, while Stott is a multiple winner of the 73km two-day race from Robertson to Swellendam.

The seasoned marathon duo is training for the world marathon championships in Singapore in October, and will be using the Breede marathon as a key part of their competitive build-up to the world title decider.

The Breede is seven weeks before the world champs, so it slots in really nicely into our training plans," said Stott. "We are going to go hard and obviously we will be out to try and win it, but keeping the world champs as our overall top priority."

Stott and Solomon bagged a victory in a key pre-Breede warm-up race last weekend, edging past Pierre-Andre Rabie and UCT student Andrew Birkett, whose challenge ended at the Secunda weir when their kevlar K2 folded badly after hitting a rock underwater as they shot the weir, leaving the door open for Stott and Solomon to race away over the last few kilometres to the finish.

"The river was low and we got worked over by Rabie and Birkett who are much lighter than us, but we were lucky not to damage our boat on the low river and were able to win it," said Stott.

Strangely Rabie has elected to race with a different paddler for the Breede marathon, but with an identical name to his partner on the weekend. This time he will replace Ikeys student Andrew Birkett with KZN based Dusi champion Andy Birkett.

"There are a number of top crews lining up for the Breede this year and it looks like it is going to be a very good race, " said Stott. "Watch out for Alasdair Glass and Edgar Boehm as well, they are going really well," he added.
