Breede Newsletter 3 (Final)

Congratulations to everyone who completed this year’s Breede River Marathon.

With today’s economic conditions it was very heartening to see the numbers are still on the rise.

NEW ROUTE

By all accounts the new day 2 route proved very successful and the finish at Kambati was equally enjoyable for the seconds and paddlers.

Water level 1 day before Race Day

These images were taken by John Hishin of Drumbeat Photography Friday morning less than 24hrs before the race.

The water level started to increase from Friday morning around 2am and has come up by 20 cumics and rising. Laughing

As the river is now, going right at Sliding weir is a no go area. The lines at the moment are centre/ far left.

The low level bridge below Sliding weir is a portage/shoot on the left or right. The water is not flowing over the actual bridge.

Bollard bridge is shootable anywhere but the down stream bollards are nast at this level. They are invisable and the water does not push the nose of the K2 away! Treat this with extream caution!

sec

Secunda Weir- go between the uprights left of centre and have fun in the big wave trains!

sec

The Low Level Bridge 5km before the end is extreamly dangerous at the current level. You can shoot it any place in the middle. Currently the right side is out of bounds as is the far left. As you can see from the below images you don't want to go left.

We have cut a portage out on the left bank 100m upstream. It is clearly marked. Approach the take out at slow speed and eddie out facing upsteam and ASAP after the portage sign. failure to complete this will see you heading under the left side.

There are no strainer/blocks in the left side so if you go under the bridge you will be spat out the bottom.

The 42nd running of the annual Breede River K2 Marathon

The 42nd running of the annual Breede River K2 Marathon

is slightly different from that which is usually raced, as it will end at the Kambati Resort near the Riviersonderend/Breede Confluence, instead of Die Stroom, Bontebok National Park, Swellendam. This change has been brought about by roadwork problems in the National Park, but last weekends pre-marathon one day race, which will also cover the 2nd day of the marathon, went off well and was enthused about by paddlers in general.

The Breede Marathon comes with a series of challenges that paddlers have to overcome – not just the distance that they will be covering, but also the obstacles that they will meet and will have to negotiate safely.
